What do I need to configure on my browser in order to carry out this procedure?

There are several things that you need to have correctly configured on your browser in order to carry out this procedure:

1. Have JavaScript activated

In order to sign and send the application, your browser must have Javascript activated.

The process for activating JavaScript may vary depending on the browser you use. Check the help option if you are unsure.

  • On the menu bar click “Tools” and then “Options…” If the menu bar is deactivated, click on the “Firefox” tab and select “Options” and then “Options
  • Select the “Content” tab
  • Click the “Activate JavaScript” box

To activate Javascript using Internet Explorer

  • On the menu bar, click “Tools” and then “Internet Options
  • Select the “Security” tab
  • Click the “Custom level button

  • On the menu bar, click on the spanner icon

2. Disable the pop-up blocker

In order to view the documents associated with this procedure (submissions receipt and the actual certificate requested), you must disable your browser's pop-up blocker.

Check the help option if you are unsure.

  • On the menu bar click “Tools” and then “Options…
  • Select the “Content” tab
  • Switch off the “Block pop-ups” box
  • Click on “OK

If you also have a Google, Yahoo or other similar service toolbar on your browser, you will need to check that this toolbar does not block pop-ups either.

3. Do not use TLS 1.1 or TLS 1.2 secure transport protocol

Our procedures are not currently prepared to function with TLS 1.1/1.2 secure transport protocols.

If you are using the latest versions of Internet Explorer, you must deactivate these protocols. Follow these instructions to do so.

  • On the menu bar, click “Tools” and then “Internet Options
  • Select the “Advanced Options” tab
  • Go to the “Security” options
  • Deactivate the “Use TLS 1.1” and “Use TLS 1.2” boxes
  • Click on “OK

4. Have a Virtual Java Machine installed

In order to perform the request procedure, you must have the virtual Java machine installed on your browser if the service requires a digital signature.

To check the virtual Java machine you have installed and, if necessary, to upgrade it to a usable version, go to the following website:

On this page, click the “Verify Java version” button to find out which version you currently have and, where relevant, whether it is possible to upgrade this to the latest stable version compatible with this service. To be able to make requests requiring a digital signature, you could have to install a compatible version, available at:

We recommend you leave only one Java version and uninstall those that are not used in order to avoid possible incompatibility problems.

During the procedure, my browser prompts me for a master password. What should I type?

The Master Password is Mozilla Firefox's access password for increased security. If you have already configured it, Firefox will prompt you for it every time you make use of your electronic certificate.

To check whether you have already set up a master password:

  • On the menu bar, click on 'Tools' and select 'Options'
  • Select the 'Security' tab
  • Check whether the 'Set Master Password' box under the 'Passwords' section is ticked off.

You can set a master password if you have not done so before or change the one you have by clicking the 'Change Master Password' button in this menu.

If you cannot remember your master password, you will not be able to use the electronic certificate installed on your browser. You can use the 'Reset Master Password' option, which deletes the current master password and allows you to set a new one; however, this action deletes all stored electronic certificates. In this case, make sure you have a security copy of all your electronic certificates so you can reinstall them, or you will have to request them again.

If you do have security copies of your certificates and you wish to reset your master password, type the following text into your browser's address bar:


Press 'enter' and you will be given the option to reset your master password. Remember: this action will delete all electronic certificates stored on your browser.

I am using the Firefox browser and it does not recognise my encryption card certificate. What should I do?

In order for Firefox to recognise an encryption card, you need to load the corresponding PKCS #11 module.

For example, for the CERES card in Windows, you need to select the PkcsV2GK.dll module, which is normally in WINDOWS/system32 or WINDOWS/system.

You should ask the card provider which module you need to install in the browser and where to locate it on your computer.

Once you have found the module, the procedure is (Example for Firefox 4):

  1. Go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Encryption
  2. Click on the Security devices button
  3. A window appears showing the security modules which are installed
  4. To install ours, click on the Load button
  5. Delete the text “New PKCS#11 module” and key in a reminder text (for example CERES PKCS#11)
  6. You must then indicate which file contains the module. To do this click on the Examine button and search for the file in the system explorer window (PkcsV2GK.dll if it is CERES, located in WINDOWS/system32 or WINDOWS/system)
  7. To finish, click the OK button a number of times to end the process
  8. Then close and restart Firefox.

Which digital certificates can I use for this procedure?

The digital certificates accepted to identify yourself and electronically sign requests and payments are those with a public key which have not been cancelled, and which are supported by @firma, the Higher Council for Electronic Administration's electronic signature validation platform. Details of the certificates which are currently valid can be found on the website: DNI electrónico > Autoridades de validación

The @firma platform accepts digital certificates that are compliant with the ITU-T X.509 v3 standard, issued by multiple certification service providers. All the providers are registered under the authority registry of the State Secretariat for Telecommunications and the Information Society of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, pursuant to Section 30 of Law 59/2003, of 19 December, the Electronic Signature Act.

Digital user certificates must be installed on the browser or available via a PKCS#11 module installed on the browser (in the case of the eDNI).

If the certificate you are using for authentication and signature purposes is not a user certificate (there are component certificates, legal entity certificates, etc.) it may be that some of the obligatory personal data (Name, First Surname, NIF) is not filled in, in which case the request will be rejected.

Electronic DNI

To use an electronic DNI for authentication and signature purposes when processing certificate requests the citizen must have on their computer a browser, encrypted card reader and operating system which are supported and must also install an encryption module.

Some procedures require you to provide electronic identification (in the same way that you would also have to provide ID if you were carrying out the procedure in person).

You can identify yourself electronically using the electronic DNI.

You can also do so using other electronic certificates issued by the Certification Authorities accepted on this site.

What information do I need to provide if I contact the Ministry of Justice about a problem?

If you have any problem that you have not been able to resolve by following the instructions above, please visit the Contact page and submit the following information using one of the channels indicated:

  • Personal details in order to track your application. Name, surname(s) and National Identification Card (DNI) number.
  • Details on the time of the error. Date and time of the application.
  • Type of user certificate that you are using, (for example electronic National Identification Card (DNI) or CERES of the Spanish Royal Mint) and its expiry date.
  • The type of client certificate device used (installed on the browser, on an encryption card, on a USB-type external memory...)
  • Type and version of browser you are using. For example, Internet Explorer (version 6, 7, 8, etc.) or Mozilla Firefox (version 3.5, 3.6, etc.)
  • Type of operating system and version you are using. For example, Windows (XP, Vista, 7, etc.) or Linux (Ubuntu, Guadalinex, etc.).
  • Version of Java virtual machine installed on your computer (,, etc.).
  • Results obtained with the Check that your computer meets the requirements necessary to carry out the procedure link

If the procedure involves payment of a fee:

  • Type of payment made(Direct debit or Credit Card Payment).
  • Bank in which the charge is debited or credit card issuer.
  • Error codedisplayed on screen, if applicable.

Please check that your computer has:

  • The pop-up blocker disabled. This is necessary in order to download the application receipt and the certificate itself (more information).
  • JavaScript activated. Necessary in order to make your application (more information).
